When we first moved to the area in 2022, we had zero hiking experience and, as such, started at the very beginning and worked our way up to more challenging hikes. Our top five easy to intermediate hikes at Moraine Lake will allow you to fully immerse yourself in this jaw-dropping location with an option thats best suited for your ability and schedule. Lake Shore Trail
The Lake Shore Trail is a fantastic way to kick off your hiking adventure at Moraine Lake. This easy, well-maintained trail provides stunning views with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for everyone.
Distance: 1.3 km (0.8 miles) round trip
Elevation Gain: 30 m (98 ft)
Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
As you stroll along the shore, you're treated to spectacular views of the lake's vivid blue hues and surrounding peaks, some of which soar over 3,000 meters (approximately 9,800 feet). With wildlife teeming on the shore, there is a chance to spot local birds or even the curious chipmunk or two. In 2023, about 500,000 visitors hiked this trail, proving its popularity among families and nature lovers seeking a low-key experience. It’s perfect for a quick walk if you're pressed for time but still want to enjoy Moraine Lake's beauty.

Rock Pile
If you're in search of a short yet rewarding hike that delivers some of the best vantage points of Moraine Lake, the Rock Pile Trail fits the bill perfectly.
Distance: 0.5 km (0.3 miles) round trip
Elevation Gain: 90 m (295 ft)
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
This trail leads you to a rocky overlook, the perfect spot for breathtaking, panoramic views. The ascent is short but steep, offering a bit more of a workout than the Lake Shore Trail. At the summit, enjoy overlooking Moraine Lake, framed by the Ten Peaks that stand in the background. In 2022, it was noted that the Rock Pile was one of the most photographed destinations in Canada, attracting roughly 200,000 photographers and enthusiasts each year!

Larch Valley
For those eager to see the stunning larch trees, especially in the fall when their needles turn golden yellow, Larch Valley is a must-visit for anyone seeking a bit more of a challenge during their visit.
Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles) one way
Elevation Gain: 365 m (1,200 ft)
Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
This intermediate hike winds through a beautiful alpine setting, complete with multiple viewpoints offering breathtaking sights. As you ascend, take time to pause and soak in the panoramic views of Moraine Lake and its picturesque surroundings. Beautiful in any season, this trail comes to life even more during late September, with around 60% of hikers noting the incredible fall colours as a highlight.
Consolation Lake
If you want a quieter hike away from the crowds, the Consolation Lake trail provides a peaceful experience with stunning views along the way.
Distance: 2 km (1.2 miles) one way
Elevation Gain: 130 m (430 ft)
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
This path meanders through lush meadows and serene forests, ultimately leading you to the tranquil, crystal clear waters of Consolation Lake. The calm atmosphere makes it ideal for allowing you to fully appreciate the incredible landscape and wildlife that surrounds you. Although the elevation can be a bit challenging at times, especially toward the end, the overall hike is manageable and rewarding. Fun fact: in recent years, about 30% of hikers chose this less-traveled path, making it an excellent choice for those seeking solitude in nature.

Eiffel Lake
Ready for a moderate challenge that promises spectacular views? The Eiffel Lake trail should definitely be on your list.
Distance: 6.5 km (4 miles) one way
Elevation Gain: 540 m (1,770 ft)
Estimated Time: 3-4 hours
This trail guides you to the picturesque Eiffel Lake with its stunning views of the majestic peaks and valleys around it. While the hike requires more effort compared to the others, each step brings you closer to incredible vistas. Hikers traverse lush forests and breathtaking alpine meadows before reaching the mesmerizing lake. This trail sees about 75,000 hikers each year and is a great 'side quest' if you are already hiking the Larch Valley Trail.
