Moraine Lake, located in the stunning Canadian Rockies, is truly one of nature's wonders. Its brilliant turquoise waters and towering mountain backdrop create an unforgettable sight, one that completely stole our breath the first time we witnessed it in the summer of 2022. During the summer months, this destination becomes alive with vibrant colours and outdoor activities, drawing visitors from near and far. If you are preparing for a trip to Moraine Lake this summer, here are ten essential tips to help you on your way to having a fantastic experience!
1. Pre-book a Scheduled Shuttle
The first step in your planning should be to secure your transportation. The Moraine Lake Bus Company offers scheduled shuttles that run regularly to accommodate visitors. Parking at Moraine Lake in your vehicle is no longer possible, and shuttles can fill quickly. By booking your ticket in advance, you can truly relax and enjoy the scenic ride, taking in the incredible views that pass by your window.
If you are looking for more information about Moraine Lake Bus Company and why they are our number one choice for accessing Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, you can check out this article or other options that are available here.

2. Bathroom Accessibility
When nature calls, knowing your options is crucial. The only restrooms available at Moraine Lake are the long-drop toilets provided by Parks Canada. These are located in the parking lot at the lake, immediately as you arrive. Although functional, they may not be the most pleasant option with thousands of visitors to the lake each day. Public access to restrooms at the Moraine Lake Lodge is not possible and there are no bathrooms along any of the trails so make sure to plan ahead and take a break before you board the shuttle or set out for your day of adventure!

3. Food Availability
At the Moraine Lake Lodge Café, visitors can find a limited menu of hot food, snacks, and beverages. However, expect longer wait times, especially during lunch hours. This cafe does not take any cash.
To avoid the wait and make the most of your time, consider packing your own picnic. A light meal by the lakeside allows you to take in the views while enjoying your food. If you do choose to use the cafe, there is some limited seating available at the front of the cafe as well as several chairs scattered around the lake shore. There are currently no picnic benches available around the lake itself but there are a couple located at the old campground near the main car park. Just remember, please do not feed wildlife and leave no trace behind in this pristine environment so it's beauty can be shared by all visitors who follow you.
4. Pack for ALL Weather Possibilities
Moraine Lake is situated at a high altitude of 1,884m (6181f) above sea level. This altitude can lead to rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the day. It is not unusual to have sunny weather one moment and a sudden snowstorm the next. To stay comfortable during your visit, pack several layers of clothing, including a waterproof jacket, umbrella, warm layers, and sturdy shoes. A well-prepared outfit will ensure you're ready for whatever weather, especially as there is not shelter available (besides the limited space inside the Moraine Lake retail store), should sudden rain or wind arrive during your visit.

5. Do Not Feed Wildlife
While you may feel inclined to share your snacks with local wildlife, it is essential to resist that temptation. Feeding animals can create unhealthy dependencies on human food and disrupt their natural behaviours. Although it might seem harmless, it can lead to dangerous situations and result in fines for visitors. Observing wildlife from a distance is the best approach for your safety and theirs.
6. Be Prepared for Bear Encounters
Now, speaking of wildlife, cute chipmunks, squirrels and birds are not the only wildlife you could encounter at Moraine Lake. Bears are frequently spotted, particularly in the summer months, with over 100 Grizzly and Black Bears calling Banff National Park home. Seeing a bear in the wild in The Rockies is exciting for all visitors, but being close to one is a situation you should avoid for several reasons, namely your safety and the bears.
During our time living here, we have unfortunately witnessed a lot of reckless behaviour from visitors when it comes to bear encounters, including exiting vehicles to capture a photo, causing 'bear jams' on the roads because they are stopped to watch a bear or simply walking up toward a bear, all HUGE no-nos. Bears, although cuddly toys we have as children are not cuddly in real life. A bear can move at an exceptionally rapid pace should they choose to, and while most have little interest in interacting with humans, they can be unpredictable. Bears should be left alone to enjoy the environment that is ultimately theirs, so if you see a bear, admire it at a distance in passing and most importantly understand bear safety.
While not all bear interactions are going to be negative, it is important that you understand bear safety before adventuring on one of the many trails in the park. To ensure your safety, carry bear spray on any trails and understand how to use it. Hiking in groups is recommended; there’s definitely safety in numbers. Stay aware of your surroundings, make noise on trails to avoid surprising a bear, and calmly enjoy their presence if you encounter one. If you need further instruction on how to use bear spray, recent bear sitings and trail closures or any other bear safety information, we suggest chatting with a Parks Canada ranger or visiting the Banff Visitors Centre. Keeping these guidelines in mind helps ensure an enjoyable experience for both you and the bears.

7. Canoeing at Moraine Lake
Canoeing is one of the standout activities on Moraine Lake. The brilliant blue waters offer a unique view of the stunning landscape. Canoe rentals are available at the lakeshore and are provided by Moraine Lake Lodge, not Parks Canada. Rentals are offered on a first-come, first-served basis for 1-hour. During the busy summer months, you can expect there to be a wait before getting out on the water, with lines on those beautiful days almost certain.
Arriving early will boost your chances of renting a canoe during your visit. Keep in mind that there is a maximum of 3 people per canoe. If you are a family of four, with two children and two adults, you will need to rent two separate canoes. As mentioned, the weather at Moraine Lake can change suddenly, resulting in sudden canoe dock closures. For up-to-date information, you can visit Moraine Lake Lodge's website or contact them directly.

8. Explore Hiking Trails with Care
An array of hiking trails awaits at Moraine Lake, catering to various skill levels. Notable hikes include the Larch Valley, Consolation Lakes, and the Rockpile Trail. To help protect the park’s natural beauty, always stick to designated trails and do not take shortcuts, as tempting as this may be when you're tired or momentarily held up by other hikers. This not only aids in preserving the environment but enhances everyone's experience as you share the beauty of the wilderness. Walking off trail can contribute to serious erosion, killing flora and increases the potential for personal injury. Help future visitors to continue enjoying these natural spaces for years to come by staying on the trails at all times.

9. Discover Tranquility Beyond the Shoreline
While Moraine Lake’s iconic shoreline views are mesmerizing, moving beyond the infamous panoramic views offered from The Rock Pile can lead to a more personal experience with nature. With a well-established network of trails, you can explore serene spots and find peaceful viewpoints. On peak days, around 30,000 visitors flock to the area, so consider heading out early in the morning or later in the afternoon to fully appreciate the stunning surroundings without the heavy crowds.
10. Embrace the Serenity
Amidst the rush to snap photos for social media, remember to pause and take in the scenery. Give yourself a moment to appreciate the beauty of Moraine Lake. Sometimes, simply being present in nature can create a refreshing perspective and lasting memories that no picture can capture.

Visiting Moraine Lake this summer is sure to be one of the highlights of your adventures. With these ten insider tips, you can enhance your experience and create remarkable memories in one of Canada’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. So, grab your camera, pack your bags, and get ready for an incredible summer escape to Moraine Lake!
