Banff, located in the heart of the stunning Canadian Rockies, provides not only breathtaking views but also an exciting range of outdoor activities and warm Canadian hospitality. If you’re eager to explore this beautiful town in a unique way, this guide will help you enjoy a day packed with adventure, delicious food, and beautiful sights—all while keeping your budget in check!
Start Your Day Right: Breakfast Options

Begin your morning by parking at the free carpark at the Banff station. This a convenient spot to leave your vehicle, especially if you plan to use public transport throughout the day. Once you park, grab a 'Canadian' breakfast from Tim Hortons,!
Tim Hortons is conveniently located as you make your way from the car park toward Banff Town. A very Canadian coffee is a 'double double' - double cream and double sugar, paired with an everything bagel and cream cheese you could easily be mistaken as a local! They also have a variety of other breakfast items, like breakfast wraps, steaming black coffee or 'fancy' iced drinks if thats more your flavour, all served in their iconic red coffee cups.
For those looking for something different, try a nearby café that focuses on local ingredients and provides a cozy atmosphere. Two of our favourites are 'Farm & Fire' and 'Wild Flour Bakery.' Here, you might savour a meal with a classic Canadian side-dish of fruit and Canadian hash-browns, which we quickly learnt are diced potatoes and not the kind of hash-brown you might be accustomed to from McDonalds.
Catching the Shuttle to Mt. Norquay
After breakfast, make your way to the free shuttle service that will take you to Mt. Norquay. This spot is a real gem, offering stunning views of the Rockies without the high cost associated with the Banff Gondola or Lake Louise Gondola. During the shuttle ride, take a moment to gaze at the breathtaking landscapes and keep your eyes open for big horn sheep as you make your way up the winding road toward Mt. Norquay resort.
Upon arriving at Mt. Norquay, head over to the chair lift for a ride up the mountain. The views from the lift are truly spectacular but even more beautiful when you reach the top! On a clear day you might see Cascade Mountain and the Vermillion Lakes out in the distance. From personal experience, we have found that Mt. Norquay is far less crowded, compared to other popular gondola ride options in Banff National Park, allowing for a more peaceful experience.

Tip: If you choose to drive to Mt. Norquay instead, be sure to stop at the view point which is located about half way along the drive. Here you can see beautiful views over the Vermillion Lakes, Banff Town and the surrounding Bow Valley - it is also a great spot for a sunset picnic!
Treat Yourself to Sweet Goodies
After enjoying the views, it’s time to return to Banff for a well-deserved treat. Be sure to try the Bear Paws, a chocolate-covered treat available at the local fudge shop. Alternatively, sample a Beaver Tail, an indulgent fried dough pastry topped with sweet options like cinnamon sugar or Nutella.
Explore Banff Town
With a sweet treat in hand, take some time to wander through Banff town. Strolling along the picturesque Bow River, with its vibrant turquoise waters set against the towering mountains. As you explore, you’ll find an array of unique boutiques and charming shops, as well as the typical tourist memorabilia stores. Look for handcrafted items, outdoor gear, and local artwork that reflect the culture of Banff. With approximately 73 shops in Banff, you are sure to discover something special to take home!

If you want to venture a little further from the downtown area, Bow Falls is a great scenic walk and a fantastic way to explore more of the scenery surrounding Banff. The 2.7km (1.6 mile) out-and-back trail officially begins at the Banff Museum and follows the Bow River through forrest, with an elevation gain of about 57m (187 feet), which will include several sets of stairs. Keep your eyes open for wildlife which are often seen in this area, such as elk and squirrels (remember to always admire from a safe distance).
Lunch Time: Indulge in Poutine

By now, it’s likely that you’ve built quite an appetite! Treat yourself to a classic Canadian dish—poutine. This hearty meal consists of crispy fries topped with cheese curds, smothered in rich gravy. With a history that originated in Quebec during the 1950's, this meal has become a classic Canadian staple.
You’ll find several eateries around town serving poutine, or you can opt for a popular local spot, 'Banff Poutine' which serves classic poutine as well as several options with a twist.
If poutine isn't what your feeling, there's an incredible variety of cuisines available throughout town, from takeaway options to fine-dining, there is something that will surely please yours and the families appetite.
Scenic Views and a Paddle at Vermillion Lakes
After lunch, how about taking a short drive or enjoying a scenic walk to Vermillion Lakes? This breathtaking area is a beloved spot among locals, showcasing the tranquil waters of these huge lakes which are framed by stunning mountain views. It's a perfect place for a mid-afternoon stroll, a paddle in a canoe or even some photography. Keep your eyes open for the natural hot-spring which flows into one part of the lakes.
Dinner with a Sunset View

As evening approaches, return to town for dinner. A relaxed, fun dining option is Magpie & Stump, one of our favourites that we repeatedly visit during Summer. Known for its lively atmosphere and delicious meals, with the added bonus of roof-top dining to soak in that late evening sun, which often doesn't set until after 10:00pm during the summer!
The fun doesn't have to stop there. Banff Town is great at hosting lots of events, so be sure to check their website for any current events or festivals. Alternatively continue exploring the local spots and enjoy a beverage at one of the distilleries or breweries, or just a good ole' bar like Melissas Missteak, which also turns into a nightclub with local DJs and music late in the evenings on the weekends.
Wrapping Up a Memorable Day
Spending a day in Banff can be a a unique and affordable adventure. With experiences like visiting Mt. Norquay and enjoying local dishes or having a picnic, you can create lasting memories without breaking the bank. Whether you are riding the chair lift, walking along the Bow River, or indulging in local treats, every moment reveals more of Banff's undeniable mountain charm.
